The piece by Whitney Phillips was very interesting to me. She brought to my attention that the issue at hand is not just a trolling issue, its a culture issue. She discussed the subcultural shift in trolling and challenging the assumption that a fundamental difference exists between trolling and mainstream culture. That stuck out to me because we have created a culture that allows trolls to thrive and have power. At times trolls can be a critic and call people out for good, to achieve a better understanding. Although, the majority of the time that is not the case and trolls do things that are intended to hurt people. The author says that this deviance that the trolls embody has a place in our media and culture. My question after reading this was how do we remove the spot that they feel the need to fill? How do we stop exploitation from being a leisure activity?
